Forest fires in Tenerife and Gran Canaria recently forced the evacuation of more than 11,000 people and caused some of telefonica’s ADSL internet servers to go down, leaving many people without internet access. An estimated total of 24,000 hectares have been burnt causing wildlife to fend for themselves as the four-day blaze in Tenerife continued to burn. Spain’s Environment Minister, Cristina Narbona, called a state of “maximum alert” and ordered more water-bombing planes to help douse the fires assisting the hundreds of firefighters battling the raging fires.
