How to make Social Network Marketing work for your business

May 7, 2009

You are surely aware by now that using the social media is the smartest way to market yourself and generate buzz in today’s world, and particularly so when you want to attract an audience that is young and hip. The social media allow you to directly engage your audience, involve them, and get them to spread the word around for you. After Barak Obama used sites like FaceBook, YouTube and Twitter to reach out to a whole nation and win the election, the question is no longer whether social media marketing works, but how to make it work for you.

Of course, your website remains the focal point of your online marketing strategy, but now it is so much more than a pretty digital brochure of your products. It is designed to be easy to navigate and to facilitate the buying procedure and, just as importantly, it is wired up to allow people to participate and share your content with their social network of friends.

Say you sell clothes online and someone sees an outfit she likes. She clicks a button, and in a couple of seconds her sister or her friends are looking at it too. You post a video of a party you attended and with a click it’s being shared around FaceBook. A client places an order, and there and then she is given the opportunity to Tweet something like, ‘Just bought this lovely dress from hotclothshop.com. Can’t wait to wear it at next week’s party’.

The second main element of your online strategy is your blog. In it, you write about topics that interest your clients, and also about your company, your industry and even about yourself. You keep in touch with your audience, give them the latest news, and let them comment back.

You should also open an account on Flickr, upload photos regularly and have them automatically show up on your blog. Say you’re doing a product photo shoot, or you attend an event, you upload a few pictures and let your audience in on what’s happening. They don’t necessarily have to be professional images; casual, random photos will do. Same thing goes for videos on your YouTube account.

Also start using Twitter to build a following and let people get to know you better in a more personal way. The Twitter social network is growing very rapidly and is going to be very big this year. Even Oprah joined just the other week! On the other hand, with a LinkedIn account you can promote yourself as an entrepreneur, and reach out to other like-minded professionals who may become clients or partners.

No matter which social media platforms you work with in the end, the secret is to use them to promote not just your website, but also each other (for example, you advertise your blog and Twitter on your YouTube videos). At the same time, your website is designed to integrate with all these other social networking platforms and make it as easy as possible for people to share your content and do your marketing for you.
